Woodland Wild Camp with Bushcraft Expert Greencraft
A Relaxed Wild Camping Trip with Burgers, Fires & Bushcraft Wisdom
Sometimes, a wild camp is less about pushing boundaries and more about relaxing into the rhythm of the woods. On this trip, I headed out for a laid-back woodland wild camp — and had the absolute pleasure of linking up with Greencraft, a bushcraft expert whose knowledge I’ve followed for a while. Add in a roaring fire, a Hilleberg tent, and a couple of burgers on the coals — and that’s what I call a good night in the wild.
The Perfect Spot & Tent Setup
I hit the jackpot with this one. Found a flat, soft patch of woodland floor — ideal for pitching — and set up the Hilleberg for a bit of luxury. I’d been craving something more indulgent than minimalist for this trip, and the Hilleberg always delivers.
The weather had been damp, the sun was trying to break through, and the air was thick with that post-rain smell that only woodlands can produce. The perfect vibe for an unrushed camp.
Campfire Cooking: Burgers & Cheese
With the tent sorted, I turned my attention to the fire. A small wood-burning stove helped get things going, and soon enough I had a steady blaze to cook on. The plan? Burgers over the fire.
I kept it simple — just meat patties and a bit of seasoning. Greencraft, being a fan of cheese (unlike me), threw some on his for that extra flavour hit. The result? Proper fire-cooked burgers with that smoky edge you only get from real flame.
Meeting Greencraft in the Woods
One of the highlights of this camp was meeting up with Greencraft. If you don’t know him already, Carl’s channel is a goldmine for anyone curious about bushcraft, survival techniques, and outdoor living.
He’s got a great ongoing series called Bushcraft for Beginners that I really recommend checking out — from knife skills to fire prep, it’s all explained in a way that makes it accessible to anyone.
We sat by his fire and had a proper chat — not just about camping, but the bigger picture: nature, wellbeing, and the joy of slowing down. Honestly, one of the most grounding conversations I’ve had in a long time.
Operation Jackdaw & Veteran Support
I also want to shout out Operation Jackdaw, who gave us permission to use this woodland. Based on the outskirts of Canterbury, Kent, they organise monthly wild camps specifically for veterans and active service members.
Although I’m not a veteran myself, I was incredibly grateful for the chance to use their land and experience the project. The sense of community and purpose behind what they’re doing is powerful — and it highlights just how much wild camping can support mental health.
Camp Highlights & Reflections
So, what made this camp memorable?
A proper, permission-granted fire
Burgers cooked over open flame
Meeting Carl from Greencraft in person
Quality gear like the Hilleberg and tarp combo
Sleeping well after a full stomach and clear skies
Dinner that night was a spicy chicken balti. Definitely had a kick, but perfect for warming up after dark.
Morning came with mist hanging low, birdsong all around, and just enough chill to appreciate the comfort of a good sleeping bag. Packed down quickly — had to be off the land in under an hour — but left no trace, as always.
